Hey there! If you’re planning a winter Colorado photoshoot, you’re in for some serious magic. Think snow dusted-peaks, crisp mountain air, and the kind of cozy vibes that make you want to curl up with a mug of hot cocoa (or maybe a hot toddy?!). But let’s face it: staying warm in the winter wonderland can be a challenge, especially when you want to look your best.
As a Colorado elopement photographer, I have years of capturing love stories across Colorado’s most breathtaking landscapes, I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping my couples warm without compromising style or the magic of the moment. Just like this snowy Boreas Pass engagement. Tracy and Paul killed it with their style and in staying warm. So, let’s dive into my best tips for staying warm during your snowy Colorado photoshoot!
If you’re a Colorado native, you know the winters here can be unpredictable, but layering is your best friend. Start with a base layer (fitted so the layers stay hidden underneath your clothes) like thermal leggings or a long sleeve shirt made of moisture-wicking material. Add on a cozy sweater or fleece mid-layer and finish with an insulated coat!
Now, if you’re planning an elopement, I know you likely won’t want to wear your coat the entire time. That’s ok! But make sure to bring it along in-between some shots because you’ll definitely want it.
Things like stylish scarves, leather gloves, and a wool hat or earmuffs will go a long way. They aren’t just functional—they can also bring texture, color, and personality to your photos! A plaid blanket or even a faux-fur wrap can add so much as well.
Nothing will make you want to go home like freezing toes. You will definitely want to wear insulated boots (bonus if they’re waterproof!) and bring along some thick, wool socks. If your heart is set on a fancier pair of shoes or boots, wear boots for the trek and switch into your other shoes right before the photos!
One awesome thing about the 21st century? Portable hand warmers. Seriously a game changer when it’s colder than cold outside. Keep them in your pockets or tuck them into your gloves for quick warm-up in-between shots! Want to be even more prepared? Bring a thermos of hot coffee, tea, or cocoa to not only warm you up, but this can also be the CUTEST prop for your winter Colorado photoshoot!
Standing still in the cold is just a recipe for goosebumps. Stay warm by moving around—snuggle close, twirl, or even be playful and have a snowball fight! Movement will keep you toasty and it brings that natural, candid energy to your winter Colorado photoshoot!
Cold, dry air can do a number on your skin. I definitely recommend bringing along lip balm and making sure you’re moisturized prior to your session to keep your lips soft and your skin hydrated! You’ll thank me later when you see your close-ups!
As a photographer, I love golden hour not only for the gorgeous lighting, but also because it tends to be a bit warmer in the afternoon. Slightly warmer temps and the soft glow of the sun against snow-covered landscapes? Count me in.
Trust me, I’ve been there—shivering on a mountaintop, camera in hand, figuring out the fastest way to get those incredible shots without turning my couples into icicles! I’ll guide you to the best spots, make it as quick as possible when it’s freezing, and capture all the magic without the misery!
Colorado photoshoots in the winter will be chilly, but with the right prep, they’re SO worth it! From snowball fights to cozy moments, these session capture the kind of love that warms you up no matter the temperature! So bundle up, and let’s make some fun memories together!
